Minneapolis Attorney Spotlight - Zack Armstrong
Zack Armstrong is an associate in DeWitt’s Minneapolis office. He is a Minnesota native who graduated from Carleton College with a degree in history with a focus on ancient/medieval studies. While at Carleton, Zack studied abroad in Siena, Italy, was a senior captain on the varsity football team, and interned in the Portland, Oregon Office of the City Attorney. After graduation, Zack moved to Los Angeles where he worked as a legal assistant/paralegal in a boutique law firm that represented pension plans and labor unions. While there, Zack worked on plaintiff-side class action lawsuits and other complex litigation matters.
After two years in Los Angeles, Zack attended an intensive career discovery program at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. Having started a landscape design business during his senior year of high school, which he continued to operate throughout his time at Carleton, Zack chose to see what a career in landscape architecture would entail. While gaining skills that continue to serve him to this day, this program confirmed that becoming a lawyer was his calling. Prior to returning to Minnesota to begin law school at the University of St. Thomas School of Law, Zack worked throughout New Zealand (“WWOOFing”) and learned conversational Thai before travelling and volunteering in Thailand.
During law school, Zack was the Managing Editor for the University of St. Thomas Law Journal, a certified student attorney, a research assistant, a teaching assistant for his legal writing professor, and an extern in the mergers and acquisition department at a large, national law firm. As a student attorney in the school’s Elder Law Clinic, he had the opportunity to represent low-income clients, argue motions in district court, and conduct a trial in Hennepin County probate court. Zack gained an understanding of what was needed to fight for his clients even in the face of a daunting, uphill battle.
Starting in the spring term of his first year in law school, Zack became a law clerk in the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office in the Community Prosecution Division. There, Zack honed his legal research and writing skills while prosecuting drug and property offenses, argued evidentiary motions, charged misdemeanor offenses, negotiated pleas, and successfully conducted a trial on a contested traffic violation. After his second year of law school, Zack became a law clerk at DeWitt.
Zack is a member of firm’s Litigation, Real Estate, Business, and Transportation practice groups. He represents clients ranging from large companies to individuals on a variety of lawsuits, including business, real estate, intellectual property, construction, and personal injury disputes. Zack’s goal is to deliver efficient and effective legal services through open and honest communication with his clients and zealous advocacy in the courtroom. Zack has successfully argued motions in Minnesota state and federal courts, has been involved in arbitrations and mediations, and has briefed issues on appeal in both state and federal courts. Zack has established somewhat of a niche in surface water runoff disputes after becoming involved with several lawsuits on that subject over his tenure at DeWitt, including being second chair for a five-day jury trial resulting in an award of over a half-million dollars for his client.
Zack loves to spend his free time with his family and friends (and cat), cooking, watching or playing sports, and fishing at his family’s cabin in the Brainerd area.
