From North Dakota then France to DeWitt's Minneapolis Office - Learn More About Law Clerk Mike Pfau
Mike Pfau is a law clerk in DeWitt’s Minneapolis office. He is a North Dakota native who graduated from North Dakota State University with a degree in Strategic Communications. While in college, Mike studied abroad in Caen, France, taught French at an elementary school, and was a public affairs intern at the Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead. There, he spent time working with local, state, and federal officials regarding the multi-billion-dollar F-M Flood Diversion project. After graduation, Mike received his Diplome d’etudes en langue francaise (DELF), a diploma awarded by the French Ministry of Education for French language skills.
Shortly thereafter, Mike worked at Capella University in downtown Minneapolis doing audit and compliance work to ensure requirements set by the Department of Education, along with requirements set by various accreditation organizations, were met.
Mike is about to start his final year of law school, during which Mike serves as the Chief-articles editor for the University of St. Thomas Journal of Law and Public Policy, a certified student attorney and President of the Minnesota Justice Foundation, St. Thomas Chapter. Mike is also a member of the Law School Engagement Committee of the New Lawyers Section for the Minnesota State Bar Association.
As a certified student attorney in the school’s Bankruptcy Litigation Clinic, he represented low-income clients, drafted and responded to written discovery requests, and negotiated settlements. Additionally, during his first year of law school, Mike volunteered every week at the Ramsey County Housing and Conciliation Court Clinic where he interviewed clients and reviewed their intake forms in order to spot issues before meeting with the volunteer attorney. Finally, Mike taught Street Law at Franklin Middle School in North Minneapolis through the Minnesota Justice Foundation which focuses on teaching basic legal concepts around self-defense, police interaction, and privacy in school, among others.
At DeWitt, Mike assists in various matters including tax controversy, estate planning, and litigation matters including partnership disputes, real property, employment, and contract breaches. He regularly drafts written discovery requests and responses, research memoranda, various pre-trial motions, and administrative appeals and otherwise assists attorneys in analyzing factual and legal components of clients’ matters.
Mike likes to spend his free time with his family and friends, listening to podcasts, and being near a pool or on the boat, weather permitting.
