Our Summer Clerk Program | DeWitt LLP
At DeWitt, you will not find a traditional program with large summer associate classes. This is because we are more interested in developing a lasting relationship with you and investing in you and your future at DeWitt. We are looking for candidates who are driven, have an entrepreneurial spirit, have the potential to become leaders, and most importantly can succeed as attorneys at DeWitt. Our summer associate program is not just about providing a fun, unique and valuable experience during the summer—it is about developing you into a successful DeWitt attorney.
Your Experience at DeWitt
We want your experience as a summer associate to allow you to get the feel for what it would be like to be an associate at DeWitt. During your experience, you will have the opportunity to:
- Accompany attorneys at trials, depositions, mediations, and client meetings
- Attend firm practice group meetings
- Take part in various associate development programs in areas such as writing, marketing, and trial advocacy
- Draft research memos, briefs, and pleadings
- Collaborate with attorneys to write articles and blog entries
- Apply your legal research and analytical skills to real cases and clients
Of course, we also want to make sure you have fun during your time as a summer associate. You will get a chance to know your colleagues better through a variety of summer events that range from outings at sporting events and group dinners to happy hours and team building activities in the office.
Mentor Program
We recognize that summer associates joining our firm will naturally have questions, such as:
- How do I get work projects?
- How do I record my time?
- How do I tell an assigning attorney that I may need more time to finish a project?
We don’t want you to panic when you have these questions. To help you in your efforts to have a successful and rewarding experience, DeWitt has a formal mentoring program for our summer associates. When you begin your summer, you will be assigned two mentors—one associate and one shareholder. This will give you the opportunity to have two different perspectives from attorneys at two different stages in the career. Your mentors will meet with you regularly to discuss your summer experience, answer any questions you might have (but were reluctant to ask), and help guide you throughout the summer. Your formal mentors are, of course, in addition to the many informal mentoring relationships you will likely develop during your time as a summer associate at DeWitt.
Recruiting
Every year, we participate in the University of Wisconsin and Marquette University’s on-campus interviewing programs. If we’re not coming to your school, please contact Kai Hovden at ckh@dewittllp.com to learn about opportunities available for you at DeWitt. Please note that we are typically looking for 2L candidates and usually do our hiring in August, September, and/or October.
