Natural Resources and Energy Law | DeWitt LLP

Our firm provides comprehensive legal support in natural resources law.  Whether you are a landowner or a mining company representative, we have the knowledge and experience to meet your specific legal needs.

Our attorneys have a multifaceted background in environmental law, real estate, business, and government relations, allowing us to effectively address the challenges faced in a variety of industries.

We are well-versed in obtaining local land use permits, as well as the state and federal permits and approvals necessary for successful real property development in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and other states across the U.S.

Some of the areas in which we can provide legal support include real estate and mineral leases, royalty agreements, drilling and exploration agreements, development and operation agreements, transportation, reclamation, and mining and water permitting. Our firm also offers guidance in government relations, ensuring that your project receives the necessary regulatory approvals.

Here are some notable representations that showcase our experience:

  • We successfully obtained all necessary regulatory approvals for the only metallic mine to be planned, permitted, operated, and reclaimed under Wisconsin's modern mining laws on behalf of Kennecott Exploration (Australia Ltd.) and Flambeau Mining Company.
  • Our attorneys played a key role in the creation and implementation of the Great Lakes Compact in Wisconsin, which governs water use and management. This involved advocating for Wisconsin agriculture and working on a series of statutes and administrative rules.
  • We have represented firms in real estate acquisition and permit approvals for land acquired for frac sand mining and processing plant purposes. Additionally, we have assisted landowners in the sale and leasing of land for frac sand mining.
  • Our firm represented a large paper company in the drafting and negotiation of the primary construction contract for the largest environmental remediation project in the history of Wisconsin.

When it comes to mining projects, competent legal assistance from lawyers with specific frac sand and mining experience is crucial. We are dedicated to adding value to your mining project by providing efficient and effective legal support.
