Attorney Spotlight - David Orenstein

David began his career representing companies in complex Chapter 11 cases at the law firm of Lindquist & Vennum (now Ballard Spahr).  As a first-year associate, he helped brief the landmark case of Northern Pipeline Constr. Co. v. Marathon Pipe Line Co., 458 U.S. 50 (1982), a victory for the client in which the United States Supreme Court struck down the jurisdictional basis for the federal bankruptcy courts nationwide.  (That same year, as a result of the case, Congress enacted curative legislation restoring the bankruptcy courts to operation).  David subsequently joined the Parsinen Law Firm (now Barnes & Thornburg) where, for twenty-five years, he represented institutional, asset-based lenders (banks, insurance companies, etc.) in Chapter 11 reorganizations and in state court actions.  He has also represented individuals, companies, and Chapter 7 trustees in countless adversary proceedings.  David is a familiar face in Minnesota bankruptcy court, highly respected by judges and practitioners for his knowledge of the law and for his practical approach.  He has been selected by his peers as a Super Lawyer in bankruptcy and has achieved a Martindale-Hubbell AV "Preeminent" peer-review rating, awarded to only those lawyers with the highest ethical standards and professional ability.  David's litigation practice in state court focusses mainly on disputes under the Uniform Commercial Code, enforcement of lender remedies, and matters relating to real estate.  He has also assisted his clients with their business transactions.

David has lectured on bankruptcy law, served on number of boards - he is currently a member of the Board of Fresh Air, Inc., a Twin Cities community radio station - and  actively participated as a member of Social Venture Partners, a non-profit organization that supports at-risk teens.

David has been married for 32 years to Leslie Miller, a native Wisconsinite and, as she has demonstrated at the Firm's summer outings, a take-no-prisoners ping pong player.  Leslie and David have three grown children residing in Chicago and two cats residing mostly on the living-room couch.  David’s passion is jazz, and he is a life-long, semi-professional (emphasis on “semi”) trumpet player.  As a movie buff, he has attended the Roger Ebert Overlooked Film Festival,  and his brother-in-law recently won an academy award for best short documentary, allowing David the thrill of hoisting the Oscar statue (it's heavier than it looks).

Disclaimer

One of the best features about our website articles and blog entries is that they are timely—you get up-to-date information on the law as it exists at the time. The downside is that the law changes, but our older entries don't. That means we can't guarantee you are getting the most current law when reading through past entries.

Please don't take these articles and blog entries and rely on them as legal advice. Give us a call instead, for specific and pointed advice for your particular situation. Note that contacting us does not create an attorney-client relationship, unless you are accepted as a client of the firm.
